Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But that also means a greater risk for fire. Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season
Corvias will be hosting a Holiday Decoration Contest starting November 18th. Decorate the outside of your home to be the best in your Community. Three lucky residents will win a $50 VISA card along with goodies from MWR. Participation is completely voluntary. To participate visit your Community office to complete a registration form. Judging will take place on December 19th and winners will be announced on December 22.
Congratulations to our spotlight award winners: CW4 Cody Patton and family, W01 Kenneth Waller and family and SSG Michael Murphy and family. These residents are being recognized for going above and beyond in improving the front entrance of their home and yard. Winners will receive a $25 gift card. Thank you for helping to make Fort Rucker a great place to live.
The average American spends more than $1,000 during the holiday season. Much of that spending is on credit cards, which means that many people face big bills in the New Year. The key to keeping holiday spending (or almost any kind of spending) under control is planning and sticking to a budget. By planning your holiday spending carefully, you can save money and still keep the holidays happy. Remember to start early! Sometimes bargains can be found months in advance. Join us for our annual Tis the Season Event on Dec 8 from 5 to 8 pm at the Corvias Leasing Center. Bring your cameras for a meet and greet with your favorite characters. Come and visit with Santa and his elves, Mickey and Minnie and Goofy, Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Belle, Cinderella, Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk, Pikachu and Charmander. Also enjoy warm cocoa and holiday cookies. You will also have an opportunity to win some fun prizes!
Fort Rucker does have its share of cold weather. It is not unusual to see temperatures drop into the 20s, and sometimes teens, during the winter months. When freezing temperatures threaten, follow these tips for preventing property damage due to freezing water pipes:
Help Prevent Your Water Pipes from Freezing!
- Ensure all air leaks are sealed that may let an icy blast reach your pipes. Call your Community Center Office and submit a work order if you observe any leaks.
- If you plan an extended vacation during cold weather, call your Community Center Office to alert them. Our Maintenance team can keep an eye on your home and check your water pipes if needed.
If water pipes freeze:
Open the cold water faucet nearest the frozen pipe to relieve the pressure of expanding ice that may cause a pipe to burst.
Find the main water cut-off valve. . .
Look for this now! If water begins pouring into your home, you will need to turn this valve off as soon as possible. Locate the main water cut-off valve today, and make sure everyone in your home knows where it is. Help prevent your precious valuables from being ruined by water damage. If a pipe bursts, call your Community Center office immediately.
The Fort Rucker Thrift Shop will be open Saturday, December 3rd for holiday shopping! The Thrift shop is located at the corner of Red Cloud and Ruf Ave (in front of the Post Movie Theater). Visit their website here or find them on Facebook!
Are you the spouse or child of an active-duty service member with plans to go to college? Go to corviasfoundation.org to learn more about available scholarships from Corvias Foundation. Applications available online.
Turn off holiday decorations when no one is home and at night before you go to bed. Timers are a great way to ensure the lights are only on at certain times.
Your community calendar can help you stay up-to-date on trash, recycling, lawn care, resident events and community activities.
You can even sync your community calendar with a personal Google calendar by clicking on the +Google button on the bottom right-hand corner of the calendar.
