As the leaves start falling and the crisp air blows it quickly reminds us that the beginning of a new season is upon us. With that season comes one of the most loved holidays, Thanksgiving. As we plan for travels to visit family and friends or what kind of pie will be on the dinner table this year, take a moment to remember what this holiday is about.
Thanksgiving has long been celebrated as “a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and the preceding year.” Sure Thanksgiving also symbolizes delicious food, long weekends and football but there is much more to it than that. Each year we take the time to give thanks for everything we are grateful for, whether it’s a person in your life, your job, your health or any number of things. Starting this year, think about how you can be more giving to others.
It can be as simple as paying it forward in the drive-thru line or joining your fellow neighbors on community clean-up day. After all, not only does giving help others, it is proven that people who give are happier themselves!
The following are some tips on how you can be a more giving person:
Volunteer your time for a charity in the area
Pay it forward
Join your neighbors on community clean-up day
Fund a cause you’re passionate about
Say thank you more often
Donate unneeded items
Help a neighbor in need (i.e. when you see a neighbor moving in, offer to help.)
Hold the door for the person behind you
Be a better listener
